AN ODD LITTLE VOICE

AVIATOR MAGAZINE

WHAT IS I️T?

W
Aviator is a quarterly fashion publication inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s novella, The Little Prince. The magazine was self directed, styled, photographed, and crafted entirely at home.

WORK IN PROGRESS

This project lasted six weeks, the duration of which I remained home due to COVID-19. Navigating the process of model casting, set building, and lighting from my parent's living room posed a unique set of challenges. I️ started this project by creating different mood boards to inspire the tone and colors I️ wanted throughout the mag. Using the aesthetic of the mood boards, I️ began sketching different outfit variations to represent the different characters of the story and started collecting second-hand and already existing materials to bring the outfits to life.

MODEL SEARCH

Luckily, I️ had a friend who remained home for the duration of the project and was more than willing to help with the payment of a few slices of pizza and an eggplant parm wedge. He had the exact aesthetic I️ needed; I️ got very lucky that my one friend who was home also happened to be photogenic AND have a pretty diverse wardrobe.

BOB THE BUILDER

Building sets without access to a studio required a lot of outside-the-box thinking and a lot of trips to Joanne’s Fabric. I️ got very crafty with DIYs and created clouds with more polyfill than I️ know what to do with. Through the set design, I️ wanted to create the feeling of moving up through the sky, starting on the ground, to the clouds, and finally ending up in space as an allusion to death.

SOFTBOX, WHO?

Who needs a softbox when you have floodlights from Home Depot and a reflector!? Yup, floodlights, and they worked perfectly. For most of the magazine, I️ wanted to achieve a warm, dreamy, and nostalgic feeling, who knew floodlights and a gold reflector would be a match made in heaven?
